Epidemic and Emerging Disease Alerts in the Pacific as of 01 August 2023

As of 01 August 2023, the Pacific region is facing significant challenges concerning epidemic and emerging diseases. Health authorities and organizations are closely monitoring the situation to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases and address potential health crises. With the rapid transmission of certain illnesses and the emergence of new pathogens, staying vigilant and implementing timely response measures are critical to safeguarding public health in the Pacific. In this article, we will explore the current state of epidemic and emerging disease alerts in the region and the efforts being taken to protect communities from potential health threats.

Highlights and updates since the previous map, which was sent over PacNet on July 25, 2023:

Influenza A and B, influenza-like illness (ILI), and

Palau: As of July 30, 2023, ILI and influenza cases that are below thresholds are still being found in Week 30. One influenza A case and eight influenza B cases were found among the 19 isolates examined in week 30, up from five cases in week 29. ILI instances are still declining; 8 cases were reported in week 30 against 10 cases in week 29. Syndromic Surveillance, Ministry of Health and Human Services (Epi Week 30 of 2023 and submit data until July 30, 2023).

2019’s coronavirus infection (COVID-19):

The results given may not accurately represent the situation in a number of nations due to the dynamic nature of COVID-19 testing, vaccination, and reporting practices throughout the Pacific area.

Tokelau: As of July 27, 2023, Fakaofo is experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak; so far, 75 community cases have been confirmed from this location. 99 COVID-19 cases have been found in Tokelau overall, and 19 more cases have been discovered since July 14th, 2023. – Source: On July 27, 2023, personal discussion with a government official.

Influenza B and Flu-Like Illness

Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI): As of July 17, 2023, the RMI weekly Surveillance report indicated that 16 cases of influenza B—10 more than the previous week—had been detected in Majuro during week 29. In addition, Majuro experienced an increase in influenza-like illness cases over the previous three weeks, with 26 cases reported in week 29, 26 in week 28, and 29 in week 27. – Source: Ministry of Health and Human Services, RMI Communicable Disease Weekly Report (reporting week 29).
